    Re: Kilted opportunities in Winter

[QUOTE=Redshank;1036717]Jimmy, oh Jimmy, you sound like a southern softie big man, wear your kilt, harden up, it's not cold wearing it as others have shown, pop up to Inveraray one day, meet up with me at the tourist office,

It seems that most people have got the wrong end of the stick here, I don't mind the cold, it doesn't bother me, I have worn the kilt in all weathers. What I am talking about is the lack of kilt wearing opportunities during winter as opposed to the more numerous opportunities in summer.
Anyway here is a pic of myself outside the Duke's castle in Inverary a few weeks ago at the food and drink festival held in his grounds. Pity I did not know that you wear in the tourist office, I would have dropped in. I would'nt mind a job with the tourist board, its something I would enjoy, any vacancies anywhere, where do you apply to?

Jimmy, since your post about your cruise and now this photo everyone has come back to say that you're looking good, and you ARE looking good, but I think that your look could be improved heaps just by wearing your kilt a little higher. Perhaps 2 to 3 inches? Just my opinion.

Sorry, I was a bit off topic with that one. I think Jimmy is trying to say that after St Andrews Day, Christmas and Hogmanay, there aren't many festive holidays which can be used as "kilted opportunities" (as he calls them) in the Winter. I myself don't need any festive holidays to use as a "kilted opportunity". Although it's nice to get cleaned up, dressed up and to go out with like minded people for an evening, I can still wear my kilts for everyday things like shopping, out for a walk, up the pub for a pint, out to eat in a restaurant and such things.

    Re: Kilted opportunities in Winter

I understand what Jimmy means, that there are fewer special, kilt oriented occasions during the Winter. Of course one is free to wear the kilt any time they like (when work regulations or safety do not contravene) but I personally prefer to reserve public kilt-wearing for kilt-oriented, or at least festive, events.

In order to wear kilts more often, here are a few options. I often throw on a kilt when I'm at home. Some members participate in Scottish Country dancing or play the bagpipes. One might also try to organize their local Xmarkers for a kilt night.

Thanks for that comment, I have been worried about this kilt for some time, I always had the feeling it was an inch or two too long, it is a good quality kilt and I acquired it second hand a good few years ago, the other expensive kilt I have is a Hunting Stewart and this was made to measure and fits me perfect. The other kilts i have are the less expensive type that I wear for rugby and football matches etc.
I think your comment shows up the positive side of this forum, giving justifiable criticism which can only help kiltwearers like myself dress better.
Can I ask you or any member of the forum, can I hand it in to a good quality kiltmaker to get it shorten, can this be done?

Again thanks for your comment it is much appreciated.

    Yes, quite easily

But - I'm not convinced the kilt is too long. It looks more to me like you're wearing it too low (on your hips instead of your waist)

It's always difficult to tell properly from a photograph but check the length against the length of your other kilt. You might also want to check the waist measurements to see how they compare as well. You might find making the waist smaller and wearing it higher is the better option

I'm assuming this is not a sport type kilt and that it has a normal 2" rise. A quick way to check is to see whether the fell (where the pleats are sewn in) measures 1/3rd of the total length of the kilt. If the fell is significantly less than 1/3rd the length measurement it is probably a sport/casual kilt and you are wearing it in the right place

thanks for advice here, this kilt is a fairly expensive one when first bought , although I acquired it second hand, its definately not a sport/casual kilt.
You may be right in saying that i may be wearing it too low but I hate wearing a kilt high up.
I'll be home later on this evening and will check whether the fell measures 1/3rd of the total length of the kilt, this is good advice.
The Hunting Stewart that I had made to measure and cost quite a few pounds does not sit too high up and is a great fit.
I definately want to get this kilt right as it has always bothered me whether it was the right length or not and this forum provides good constructive criticism.

    Re: Kilted opportunities in Winter

    Jimmy,

You say "I hate wearing a kilt high up". I can assure you that there are a lot of members on this forum that said the same thing at first. It feels strange "high up" because you're not used to wearing trousers at that height. Almost all of these members, after asking questions here (and being reassured), have tried it at the higher up position, got used to it, and now actually prefer it at this higher up position.

Try it. It will look and (eventually) feel MUCH better.

BCAC is right about it looking better higher up, especially when you are wearing a jacket and vest. Too low and you start to see white shirt in the gap between the two

Sorry Jimmy, I'm afraid you wouldn't get the job, the white hose would go against you

Just pop into your local VisitScotland office and register your interest with them, they are always looking for seasonal staff
