The perfect kilt - if price is no object

Just a bit of curiosity on my part. Pretend you won the lottery and could afford anything you wanted. Or pretend that you were only going to buy one kilt in your lifetime, and wanted the very best kilt that money could buy. Whatever the case, you are after a traditional 'tank', completely hand-made (and hand-stitched), 8 yards of 16-ounce wool or heavier, knife-pleated, double fringe, etc. You want the finest quality kilt you can get, and you don't care what it costs.

Who would you have make your kilt?

I'd have Matt Newsome make it from 4 yards of Harris tweed woven in the Thompson camel tartan,* Kingussie-pleated to the blank-and-white stripes, with a double fringe on the apron. No belt loops, thank you.




*Yes, I know it's not an "official" tartan, but I like it and my great-grandmother was a Thompson.

I know what I would want, but no clue who would make it for me. Weathered Davidson knife pleated, 8 yard, triple fringe, embossed brown leather straps, and weathered brass buckles.

Actually, I'm most impressed with Paul Henry's fringe work, Matt Newsome's attention to detail, and the quality of my USA Kilts... could I have a consortium of kiltmakers buikd my kilt?

At this moment I would choose Lady Chrystel.
But I don't feel 100 % comfortable making that statement. After all I have been debating on details of my tweed jacket and waistcoat for going on 9 months now.

I'd have John Hart from Keltoi build me an 8-yard military box-pleated kilt in Roxburgh Ancient. Would also like a Barb T. kilt, but John edges her for first on my wishlist.

Yep...Matt Newsome...but 6 yards cause I'm fat...yes to the custom weave Harris Tweed but in my own personal tartan...Kingussie for sure.

I can't think of anybody I'd rather have make me a kilt than...me!...Now if you asked what doublet I'd want...I've got all sorts of ideas.

Money's no object???

1. I'd have an entire bolt of Black Watch weathered woven for me in the 20+ oz range. Something insanely over-the-top heavy weight. That specific tartan is beautifully simple and understated, but it's still a great tartan. Also, it's not one you see everyday.

2. I'd have the weaving rush ordered to be done in a week or less.

3. I'd pay through the nose to have it hand-sewn, also in under a week, by the greatest kiltmaker in Scotland.

3. Triple fringe is a must on all of them.

4. Cordovan red kilt straps, embossed with zoomorphic animals.

5. Solid brass buckles. Scratch that. Solid GOLD buckles. Or solid silver. Dunno. Maybe I'd have the kiltmaker put special interchangeable kilt buckle keepers on so I could switch buckles based on my whim...

6. To accessorize, I'd need one each of each style of Ferguson Britt sporran, in every color available.

7. I'd also have to find a Ka-Bar sghain dubh.

When it was all finished, I'd have it flown to me wherever I was at the moment, via private jet, then on to Donald Trump's private helicopter, where it would be handed to me by Sir Sean Connery while Julie Fowlis sang "Hug Air A Bhonald Mhoir". Sir Sean and I would enjoy a dram of Lagavulin 21 and a fine Cuban cigar while chatting about our common MacLean heritage.

Lastly, the kilt would be accompanied by a large parcel of land on the Isle of Mull so I could go properly kilted amongst kinsmen.

Sounds reasonable...yes?
