It was discussed in another thread. Seems Hunting is meant for more common day wear, the red for more formal evening wear.

However, bottom line...wear what you got.

Looks as though Burnetts & Struth have wool casual kilts available in maclean tartans for less than $250... Might be worth checking them out...

I did look on Scotweb earlier, and it looks like you can get an 8yd for $370... Was looking at 16oz, and that was i believe marton mills, so if youre looking for lighter you might get it a little lower...

I have both kilts: a 13oz MacLean hunting (seen in my avatar above left,) and a 16oz MacLean of Duart modern (also posted on the site here.. I'll post a few pics of the hunting when I get a chance.

I've worn the MacLean hunting to black tie events, and it looks wonderful. It's also the tartan you're likely to see in pictures from Duart castle. On the other hand, I've worn the MacLean modern with a t-shirt and sandals, and it looks great no matter what you pair it with.

Both tartans are great. The red tartan is regal and demands attention! The hunting is noble and modestly understated. Both are seen in the clan tent at the games with no serious prejudice towards either.

The red looks very sweet Cousin. I think thats what I want in weathered/muted.

    Question bout your 16 oz
Im just north of Victoria (north of you). Do you find it too hot in the summer?

I wear 16 oz kilts in the summer...and I live in Kentucky! I don't think you'll have any problems in BC.

Ckeck into that weathered/muted colors, cousin. Those are usually special weaves and will run you a few hundred extra dollars and maybe an extra mounth wait.

I too am looking for the right deal for my first MacLean tartan kilt.

Are you planning to attend the clan gathering?

Quite right, Sandy! I am not too far from you (as we are both aware) in Cincinnati, and I too wear 16 ounce kilts year round, and never have any problems of discomfort!

    Cheers,

I leanin toward Scotweb, or Skye Highland Outfitters I think. The price of the weathered & modern are the same.

I would like to go to a gathering 1 day. Not sure when Ill be able to go though.

Both tartans look great. You could go with either, Knotty.
