New Hay Kilt from Barb T.
As a retirement gift to myself, I asked Barbara Tewksbury to make a Hay Kilt for me. She agreed and it arrived shortly before Thanksgiving. Moving into a new home and the holiday have limited my opportunities to wear a kilt but here is one of the first pictures of it.

The craftsmanship is what we have come to expect from Barb. The alignment of the pattern is perfect. The fit is perfect also, but I'm going to watch my weight so I don't outgrow it!
Thank you so much Barb for making this for me!
I'm having some adjustment problems with a new computer that is running Windows 7, Home addition, so I'm not able at this time to post multiple photos, but I will show the side and back views in another post, later.
Also, the material for this kilt comes from Locharron, in the Strom weight, and they are using a larger sett size and a brighter red thread than a previous kilt I had in the Hay pattern. I have another photo where I show the two kilts side by side. I like the larger sett and brighter red, but I'm going to keep the older kilt because my wife has a long skirt in that patter and I'll wear it when we attend a function together. (Figured out how to move between Photobucket and here, on my new computer, so here is the extra picture.
Moderators, I tried to post this in the Kilt Pictures part of the Forum, but got an error message, so I posted here. Please feel free to move this thread if it fits better elsewhere. Thanks.
More to post later as we settle in.
Regards,
Tom

That's a fine kilt you have there. Congratulations on your retirement and move.
Now you need a pair of Hay hose to go with it.

Tom,
What are some additional details of your kilt? I.e. - type of pleating, how many straps and buckles, black or brown straps, silver or brass buckles, fringing (single, double, triple), belt loops or no belt loops, etc. I am looking to order my first Barb Tewksbury kilt fairly soon and am quite keen on hearing from those who currently own a Tewksbury kilt!
Thanks mate,

Thanks mate,
The kilt is pleated to the sett. That is, the pattern on the pleats matches the pattern on the front apron. Other options would have been to pleat to a given vertical stripe on the back, such as the white stripe. There are threads elsewhere where this is discussed extensively if you need further info.
I think this has resulted in the buckles being further to the rear than on many of my other kilts, but it helps to maintain the pattern all the way around. With a smaller sett size, the buckles could have been placed further forward on the hips, I'm guessing.
I requested 3 straps, one on the left and two on the right. The lower one on the right is not really necessary, but looks more traditional. The straps are black leather and about as thick as a normal belt leather. I have some kilts with straps that are much thinner. They tend to curl forward , but I don't think these will. The strap buckles are a heavy bright silver. Very substantial. I believe Barb also offers kilt straps in brown.
It has a double fringe, with the first fringe about 1/4 inch long and the second about 1/2 inch long.
I also requested 2 sporran belt loops on the back and these were matched to the pattern of the kilt very precisely. If you didn't wear a belt, I don't think anyone could see that they were there from a distance of 3-4 feet away.
These are all options you should discuss with Barb directly, but she was most helpful.
I hope this helps!
Regards,
Tom
