Just ordered a MacLaren Weathered tank

I have just ordered a 16oz 8 yard wool tank from my local kiltmaker in Thurso.

The only kilt I have seen was worn by the clan chief at the meet in July this year and it looked great but looked more brown than this picture.

    Donald MacLaren on the left.

If anyone here has a kilt in this tartan, I would be very pleased to see a photo.

    Chris.

16oz MacLaren weathered by Lochcarron, Chris

I have seen the Chiefs Kilt in a number of photos Chris and I have never thought it to be a weathered version. I always thought it was some special weave that he had made for himself but as you say, in the flesh it has the brown tonings of the weathered.

Congraulations on the order and I am sure you will love the weathered colour scheme

The swatch image you posted, as well as Downunder's pics, look to be Lochcarron's weathered MacLaren tartan, but that's not what your chief is wearing.

I have made a few kilts in the weathered MacLaren tartan. Very nice coloration, you should be pleased.

I agree with Matt. I was at a dinner with the chief just last week and whilst I did not study his kilt too closely there appear to be subtle differences although it is a weathered version, probably simply made by a different mill

What I can tell you is that Donald told me he wears his late father's kilt, so that makes it quite old and possibly from a mill no longer producing

Or, if that's the case davidg, perhaps this specific weave is pre- 'Weathered', what I understand to be a fairly new color palette? Maybe it's a Muted?

    Just a thought.

And it's a good thought. It could well be

Sometimes with these weathered or muted versions it can be hard to pick up on the sett with just a glance. I wore weathered last weekend and was asked what tartan I was wearing by those who should know better. But I understand the visual confusion that can happen when we are not paying attention and, I suppose, you shouldn't really be looking too hard to see what tartan that is just below my sporran

Re: Just ordered a MacLaren Weathered tank

    Thanks for the info guys.
My last tank from them was a MacLaren Ancient in Lochcarron strome but they also use House of Edgar so I don't know which I will get. It is an unusual tartan for them in the land of the Gunn's and Sinclair's.
The explanation for Donald MacLaren's kilt now makes sense. It would be truly weathered by age and was probably from a small local mill no longer in existance.
The MacLaren clan society UK website state the following...
"DC Dalgliesh, Dunsdale Mill, Selkirk, can supply all the above tartans, most of which are carried in stock."
So I mentioned this to them in case they were having any difficulty getting the fabric.
I am not too bothered which mill it comes from as all 3 are good quality.

Thanks for the pictures Downunder. That is a beautiful kilt .

The shop in Thurso have said as long as they can get the tartan in time, I will have the kilt for Christmas.

    Chris.
