    Personally I always wear a belt with my casual outfit. I like the look, it's that simple. I never use the belt loops for it and have been critized several times for not doing so. I use the belt loops only for the sporran chain.
    But as a belt is just an accessory I say "to each his own"

    i only wear a belt with my ghillie shirt for the gigs i play. the rest of the time i have a waistcoat on . the belt imo does come in handy but only realy to complete a stark rig or to give a visible break between shirt and kilt. just another word of advice if you are going to wear a belt make sure you have a day sporran as they like to scuff up cantles on the dress ones.
