Did he give you a reason for wanting it that way? Maybe if you showed him a woman's blouse and a man's shirt that button on the opposite sides, you can equate that with right and left on the kilt.
However, if that doesn't work, he is the 'customer," and he may still want to have it done his way. Good luck!
