How many combinations can you make out of brie, water crackers, peanut butter, cherry preserves, pears and apples? That's what I have in my refrigerator now, as I just brought my mother to my home from the hospital late last night. Oo,Oo, I have cocktail onions, greek olives, pimento. Things are looking up! Could have quite a little tasty feast here! This is GREAT after days and days of hospital food!

Well here's how it went for me.

I was invited to my friend's house to share their "Christmas dinner".

For starters there was fried foie gras (duck liver) with a sauce made of raspberries and a slice of baked apple (sweet and sour). It was OK.

Then he brought out his "piece de resistance" to big applause (they even took photo's of the dish). It was a "carrée d'Agneau" (roast lamb ribs) but unforunately for us he had missed the cooking of it and it wasn't cooked enough. YUK!

For the end of the meal he had spent hours making a rolled cake with lot's of cream and butter and things which was OK but nothing special.

The evening was great and it was good to be among friends so I was grateful to be invited. Although he served really too much alcohol. The French start with an alcoholic drink which they call the "aperitif", have a wine with each course and finish with a strong alcohol (brandy, Armagnac or home made but very strong).

Next year I will try to be home and have a real Christmas dinner.

Since Hanukkah falls over Christmas this year, we are having Horseradish Crusted Brisket with sweet potato latkes garnished with sour cream and apple compote.
