Purple Hose
I have a beautiful Isle of Skye kilt that I intend to wear to an event in late January. I was hoping to buy some purple hose to wear with it, but it seems that few retailers carry purple hose and even fewer stock them.
I spoke with a very helpful gentleman at the Scottish Tartans museum who was sad to inform me that even their suppliers didn't have them in stock. I have checked several other advertisers, none of whom list purple hose. I have only checked US based companies because time is an issue and I'd rather not pay more for shipping than I will for the hose.
Does anyone know of a US based retailer that carries purple hose?

Re: Purple Hose
I purchased my first set of purple hose from an ebay vendor selling W Brewin hose in a variety of colors, and I do not remember from which side of the Atlantic they came but shipping did not take long. Brewin make a decent hose but not particularly heavy in weight.
My other IOS hose choices have been a marled purple/navy handmade cable knit, a "triced" variation of diced hose with more colors but also handknit, a House of Cheviot cream hose with thistle pattern knit into the turnovers (three very large thistles per hose top rather than a single small thistle embroidered on as some vendors sell), then I would fall to navy blue pipers, burgundy Lewis, lovat green pipers, and even another W Brewin pair in stone or tan (picks up one of the thinner subtle stripes).
Good luck with your search.

Re: Purple Hose
House of Cheviot makes them in their Rannoch line. I have a pair in purple from HOC's Lewis line, but I'm afraid this particular colour has since been discontinued from the Lewis line of hose. Matt at New House Highland, Chris at Dunadd Trading Company, or Timothy at House of Labhran should be able to help you. There is also Almost Unwearoutable, which gives you an additional option of a patterned hose top - I own several of these style of kilt hose, in the coquet pattern.
Cheers,

Re: Purple Hose
I don't know of a US company, and I don't know what the shipping cost is from these guys, but they do have knee-high socks (hose) in "ultra-violet" for 14.20 GBP. At least you have an alternative if you can't find something anywhere else.

Re: Purple Hose
As the North American distributor for the House of Cheviot hose, you can check my list of retailers here:

Though, I do have to say, that the STM gift shop is the only one that springs to mind that regularly orders purple colors, and I know you've already checked with Ronan there.
Sorry about the timing! But it will be at least mid-January before anything gets restocked.
You may consider other colors. OCRichard has demonstrated that claret looks very nice with the Isle of Skye tartan. Grey is also a nice color, either the dark charcoal or the mid-grey looks good with this tartan. And I've seen several shades of green that look nice with this tartan, as well. Because the Isle of Skye tartan itself has three different greens in it, green hose tend to find something there to tone with, be they bottle/tartan green, loden green, or lovat green.

And if you do go with a green (or other colour), perhaps you could find purple garter ties to kinda-sorta go for the same look you were originally trying? STM does list purple garter ties, though I don't know if they're in stock either.

Indeed. I have lovat green hose and I have purple flashes that I made. I was hoping to juxtapose those colors (sort of) by going with purple hose and bottle green garter ties. At the moment, I am leaning toward Matt's suggestion of either grey or claret.
