But, they're diced hose that just happen to have the same colours of a tartan.
I highly recommend the STM custom hose, which retails for around $110 USD. I like House of Cheviot, but on a shorty like myself, they tend to run a bit "long". The STM hose are bespoke.

I would agree with this, besides the feeling of knowing that the hose were made just for you, personally I prefer the colour, I find the House of Cheviot hose to be a bit too close to orange for my tastes.

Todd,
This is why all of my non-bespoke hose are ordered in a size small. The height of the hose ends up being perfect on my legs - around a three-finger width below my kneecap (I am 5' 10" tall). The actual foot portion of the hose is unaffected by my actual shoe size of 10.5 US. The hose have always fit great!
Cheers,

The 'ancient' (lighter colour) variation of their red (scarlet) colour is indeed more of an orangish tone, but their red and white, red and black, red and navy, etc, etc, hose, all have a very reddish hue. Are you speaking of the ancient variants that HOC offers, Glen?

I am not sure, what I do know is that the red in the bespoke seems deeper than the red in the diced hose offered by House of Cheviot. I have done a side by side comparison when I picked up the bespoke Red and Black diced hose at the Scottish Tartan Museum. I am sure not many would notice the difference. However as an artist the difference in hue was apparent to me.

Hmmm, that is interesting. It's obvious that it must be subtle differences in the red yarn being used. Thanks for sharing.

Anytime Kyle, I really must say, as you are most likely aware, there are few things as satisfying as wearing bespoke hose. To me they were a luxury item certainly, but they were worth every penny.

There are only so many color combinations for diced hose, and the most common ones are already registered tartans. Note that the last combination has been used in the Highland regiments for years before it became a registered tartan. Apparently the Scottish Tartans World Register and the Scottish Register of Tartans didn't think that disqualified the "MacMedic" tartan from becoming a registered tartan. I think the obvious lesson is that diced hose are not considered to be the same as tartan.
The rest of these I did not know, thank you.
MacGregor/ Rob Roy, WR#1504:
Moncrieffe, WR#963:
Northumberland, WR#2444
Robin Hood is in the STWR, as WR#785

And MacMedic is in there too, WR#2684:

I concur! There is nothing quite like them.

I shall now have some crow for breakfast.
First, I have updated my location to reflect "Sophomorehood." I am clearly no longer a n00b, but demonstrably still an underclassman. My location will continue to read "sophomorehood" until 01-01-2013 or Steve Ashton removes it, whichever comes first.
MacMurdo, JFSMACLJR please accept my humble and public apologies for having painted with too broad a brush.
In general I find North Americans (mylself included) know some but not all of the rules and customs of highland wear.
It is this incomplete knowledge that leads some people who are not ignorant and are not apathetic to sometimes break rules they didn't know existed. Sometimes their out of bounds fashion choices look OK, and sometimes they don't.
You are both in a small cadre of North Americans who post here regularly and look good doing it. No disrespect intended.
JFSMACLJR you are on here giving good advice almost every day. I have never known you to be wrong. Having grown up in (border state) Kentucky myself, I was shocked to find, when I moved to New York at age 20, that nearly every town and village I visited had a street named Union Street. At about age 30 I moved to North Carolina. I will forgo my further stories about the late unpleasantness of 1861 to 1865. I am perhaps overly sensitive to such things.
Honestly McMurdo your pic in red and black diced hose posted elsewhere was the one that got me to photchop red and black diced onto my "MacOnion" sett kilt. It looks good. But your kilt isn't "MacOnion", yours is "MacMustard".
I didn't doubt either one of you, but I wanted to know why. My apologies.
