What if the kilt was made of parachute pants material?

Re: "Western" Style with Contemporary Kilts

i stopped wearing dress shoes in the 90's and have been wearing cowboy boots with suits, slacks, etc. i wore cowboy boots for both my own and several friends' weddings with a tux. the only time i wear shoes is to work out. but i do not think i will wear cowboy boots with a kilt--doc martens for me.

i do have my eye on western vests for kilt wear since they are waist cut.

even though i was born in austin, texas, i was whisked away as a toddler before cowboy hats and country music took hold.

The closest I ever get to this look is when wearing my Tilley hat. I wear a bolo, but haven't with a kilt, though I gotta say that Chris looks good in his (mine is snakeskin so I'm not sure it really works). I have boots but again, I cant do it. Only person I ever saw who pulled off a kilt with cowboy boots was GGGP. Picked up a western style tux jacket from CMcG that I'm still having trouble putting together.

    In short....

If you mean the low cut boots, I think I know what you're talking about.
I didn't mean to limit the descussion to "cowboy" garb. In fact, I think I should have just asked for styles of the Western US.

Kilted cowboys!?!? OK, I guess...whatever floats your boat. Must hail from the Wild West of Scotland...

    Dude cowboys we call kaboys.
Working cowboys hardly ever get out of their work attire - Wranglers, denim shirts and boots. A blue denim kilt might just pull the look off with the rest of the get up in the work environment and gatherings.

Does raise questions of comfort in the saddle though.

Maybe I'm dating myself here, but back in the day [early 90's perhaps] there were a couple of guys in Wyoming that broadcast on NPR, they wore kilts and cowboy hats and boots...can't remember the guys or the show but I do remember they kicked Scottish and Cowboy style. Saw their ads in PC magazine.

Bugbear, I think I know what you're talking about when you say "low cut boots". They are often called "ropers". Usually they're an 8" tall lace-up boot with a fringed piece of leather at the bottom of the laces, extending over the toe area (this is sometimes called a "kilt" or "kiltie").

These boots can work with a kilt, as they're not too terribly different than many traditional low-rise boots worn historically with the kilt in Scotland. I have a pair made by Ariat, though I've removed the "kilt" from the bottom because it curled up after many years of use and looked pretty silly.

As far as wearing "Western styles" with a kilt, I would be tempted to do it in a very mild fashion. Certainly nothing so bold as wearing a cowboy hat or cowboy boots. But perhaps a western-cut solid-colour corduroy shirt with pearl snaps, so long as it wasn't "over the top" in terms of throwing off the entire visual effect.

My wife at one point made a western-style kilt belt, using a custom-made silver buckle with a turquoise stone in it (supplied by the customer). The belt was done with Sheridan-style tooling patterns like you often see on western saddles. The end result was a very Western take on a kilt belt. Much like a regular cowboy belt, but upscaled to kilt width.
