I will probably end up making myself another kilt or two (most likely 6 yard knife pleats) down the road...but that's more because I enjoy making kilts...not because I need any more.
Right now I have 4 kilts: an 8-yard 16-oz wool traditional kilt, a 4-yard box-pleat wool kilt, a Utilikilt, and an el-cheapo acrylic kilt that I bought on a whim, thinking it would be a good 'beater'. Oh, and a true hand-sewn 'tank' on order from Barb Tewksbury.
I can honestly say that I do wear my traditional wool kilt the most, but my box-pleat and Utilikilt see some use too (depending on what I'm doing). But the acrylic kilt never gets worn. Even as a 'beater' kilt, it just looks so bloody awful that I don't want to wear it. The pleats always look wrinkled and sloppy, and they simply don't hang like wool. Plus, the construction of it is rather cheap and was not built for my measurements. It's a true "off the peg" cheapo kilt, and I just hate wearing the thing. So I'm going to end up selling it and reinvesting the money in something else. It's one of those "lessons learned" that everybody has to go through as they figure out what works best for them, and what level of quality/fit they desire.
I agree with this 100%. In keeping with the previous thought of buying something and regretting it later...I have held off on buying several jackets. When I spend money on a tweed jacket, or an Argyll...it's going to be top quality and a good fit. I have done one tweed jacket conversion. It's okay, but I've grown to really dislike jacket conversions in general...I've only seen one or two EVER that were not immediately identifiable as a conversion. The real deal just looks 1000x better IMHO! When I get myself a real tweed jacket, I know that I will NEVER wear my converted jacket again. I know that might come off as a bit snobbish...but it goes with my mantra (learned after many wasted dollars in the past)...save up, buy once, buy quality!
I did the same thing. I bought two tweed jackets at Goodwill and had them converted. And while the conversion was well done (by Victoria), I simply do not wear them any longer since I now have three 'real' kilt jackets made in Scotland. Again, this was part of my learning process and wardrobe-building. They served their purpose, but I simply won't wear them ever again because I have better jackets to choose from now. So they'll be sold as well. All part of the fun!
