I'll have to take a look at the job market there first, but may have to look you up if I go on any interviews. If nothing else, just for a kilt night with a new group of kilties!

Re: Where would you move?
The Nebraska panhandle, where I live now, isn't too bad. Great fishing, hunting, etc. It's not flat and covered in corn. That's the "other" Nebraska, along I-80. I'm just south of the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota (less than a 1 hour drive), and dozens of other cool places. There are a lot of historical sites around here. Unemployment is among the lowest in the country...3rd lowest last time I checked. The cost of living is low. The only downside is that around here you're likely to drive between towns almost daily for one reason or another. For example, my wife teaches on the reservation and has to drive 45 miles each way, and I drive 25 miles to and from classes. Much like AZ, there is a ton of open space and a lot of distance between towns. The county I live in is 1 1/2 times the size of Rhode Isalnd and has about 5000 people. The next one to the east is bigger than Connecticut and has even less people. There are plenty of bigger towns though. If you don't mind smaller towns, it's a good place to live. Crime is low. The keys have hung in the ignition of my truck for three years, and we haven't locked the house in so long that my wife and I honestly don't know where the keys went!
Even though the cost of living is a little higher than eastern Washington, I'd say anywhere between Bellingham, WA and Ashland, OR, is a good place to be. My top choices would be Portland, Grants Pass or Astoria Oregon, or anywhere in the Puget Sound area. My absolute top choice would be my native Whidbey Island, preferably Coopville or Oak Harbor, or Anecortes on Fidalgo Island...basically anywhere in Island County. Second would be Port Angeles, or almost anywhere on the Olympic Peninsula. Seattle-Tacoma and Olympia are okay. The reason I'm not there right now is employment and cost of living. It can be a tough place if you don't have a degree, and even then as well. If you have a decent job, there is almost too much to go do and too many places to explore. Once I finish my degree, I'm planning on moving back to NW Washington. I went around the world several times in the Navy. I'd have to sit here for too long to count how many countries I've been to and how many times, but I can sum it up by saying that I've walked on six continents and have seen the coast of Antarctica three times. With all those places, some interesting and exotic, and some just plain nasty, I can tell you that IMHO, NW Washington is paradise!
The grass is greener on the other side of the fence...and it's usually greenest right above the septic tank.

Myself, I'd go back to Scotland. The only thing stopping me now is this bloody stupid french income tax system.
I've travelled quite a bit in 31 years military service and in my travels I've found places that I could easily live in but, like the saying goes, there's no place like home.
Someone mentioned Belize? I've lived there (for 6 months, back in the 80s). Nice place. A bit warm. The Cayes are like paradise. I went to San Pedro, as well. I think I prefer Caye Caulker, though. I had a great six months, but I don't really think that I could live there. It would be a very laid back life. Ok if you want the shorts and T Shirts kinda life. Don't even think of taking Scottish Highland wear there, unless you have a refrigerated room (cold storage) to put your kilts in. High humidité, coupled with high temperatures, just rots wool over there.

Re: Where would you move?
If I could I'd have a home part of the year in Tuscany, close to Florence, and spend the other part of the year in the area of Argyll between Crinan and Kilmartin. However, (despite missing Scotland and 'my ain folk'), I live in a very nice part of Massachusetts within a block of a beach on the Atlantic coast with the two most important people in my life, my wife, and wee boy. ![Smile](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Central Texas, by all means. No income tax, friendly people, good economy and politicians from both sides afraid to screw it up. The weather can be a bit warm in summer, but no worse than AZ. As a native Californian that when the U.S. Army dropped me and the family here, they did us a favor.
Good luck.

Caulker would be nice, and the commute to "work" would be gorgeous as I'd have to work on Ambergris to get better tourist traffic.
As for not bringing wool kilts. I could live with PV if it meant living there. I'd just store my wool with family in the States.
With that thought in mind, who wants to commission a run of the R'lyeh tartan in PV?! :cthulhusmiley:

Re: Where would you move?
Here in Central Massachusetts is nice. I will probably die here. If I could have any wish I might choose mid- to East Coast Maine - Machias to the Canada border. Prince Edward Island would be nice. Another fancy I have is to live out my days weaving in the Hebrides.

CHEAP PV then, because even PV is not safe!
I wouldn't even have to work. We worked it out that 15$ a day would be enough to live on with a place to stay, your meals AND nightly parties. I have enough to do that without working.
