looking for a tartan
Looking for a friend of mine, he's a Melrose, I know Low Lander but he's a good guy. since his last name is of the town and abbey it's been hard to trace his roots back. his family bible goes back 100's of years but the only name we can find is Melrose in it. I found a tartan once but can't remember where, if any of you can help it would be appreciated

Re: looking for a tartan
Try http://www.tartansauthority.com/ but you'll have to find a sept or clan somewhere first. It may be that your folks took the name of the town http://www.melrose.bordernet.co.uk/ in which case you would look to the local clans -Scott being a good contender: http://www.tartansauthority.com/tart...search-results

Re: looking for a tartan
Yeah, I'm just wondering if somewhere along the line somebody took the name of the town, or was "given" it by the immigration authorities. My name got changed before I was born, when my grandfather landed in Canada and it was instantly Anglicized.

Re: looking for a tartan
Hi, Deke – a quick search of the Scottish Register of Tartans produced four setts named Melrose.
The first is a district tartan, while the fourth is a corporate design for a company in Alabama.
But the second and third, which share the name Melrose (Newbigging), are family setts designed for an Australian family that traces its ancestry back to a “Mellros” who was born in Scotland and died in 1820.
The second of these is called Melrose Newbigging Grey, and it seems to be intended as a hunting tartan.
I would go for the red and green version if I had a connection to it.
Regards,
Mike
