Re: An Open Letter to Jock Scot
Jock hasn't officially "left", his user profile shows he's been checking in. But after the ugliness that developed in a thread that SPECIFICALLY asked for the advice of native Scots on their opinion of "outlanders" wearing the kilt I wouldn't be terribly surprised if we didn't see much of him for a good long while, and I can't blame him.
We're all poorer for his absence, if you ask me.
I might not agree with him 100% of the time, but greatly respected his opinion all the same.

Artificer, thanks.
I stopped following that thread early on as it started annoying me. I can fill in the blanks from here, I think.
And I agree. I learned a lot from Jock, and always looked forward to his posts. Much respect for him and hope he returns someday.

What fateful post? What reply?
Is the thread(s) still available for us ignorant unwashed? If so, please point us to it, so we can be enlightened.
I recall a thread in which Jock asked for input from his fellow countrymen about the wearing of the kilt, and I recall some replies (mostly from non countrymen) that were contrary in nature, but I do not recall many (if any) that seemed offensive (to me, anyway). Perhaps, that is not the subject thread, or perhaps I did not follow it to its conclusion.
Nevermind. I found the now seemingly interminable thread. Indeed, I did not read to its conclusion, but will do so, if I can make it.

Reason: Found it! I think.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Look at Jock's profile and look up "all posts by Jock Scot" and you can see his last post(s).
I agree with others here. I do not agree with him 100% of the time (maybe not even 75%), but I respect his opinions. I lift a glass of Ardbeg to you, Jock.

Decidedly. His absence -- and the long pauses of others who have contributed so much true knowledge and real life-times of kilted experience -- increasingly often makes for shallow discussions among those who are wishful thinkers, believers in mythology, or new carriers of coals to Newcastle. Mine is a Talisker to you, Jock. Enjoy your break.

Re: An Open Letter to Jock Scot
I've always enjoyed Jock Scot's posts and will definitely miss his input should he choose to withdraw.
I've learned a great deal about how to wear the kilt in the traditional way from Jock, and consider him to be a great resource. There are few here who possess his knowledge and experience — gained from a lifetime of wearing the kilt. As a result, I've always found his opinions and insights among the most interesting expressed on the forum.
XMTS won't be the same without him.

Re: An Open Letter to Jock Scot
Can you really blame him for leaving? When he was asked for an opinion, he gave it. After that some people took it as the gospel and in a round about way attacked him for it. It may have been unintentional, but at times we all forgot that they were just opinion. Maybe just his or his close friends felt that way. If we all followed someone else's opinion, probably none of us would be kilted. I truly hope he comes back, and most of us need to remember- just because he lives in the highlands does not make him the final word in highland attire or specifically how you wear it.
like the old saying "Opinions are like a**holes. Everyone's got one, and they all stink but your own."
