Can you fit into clothes you bought 10 years ago?

OK, in light of the oft-heard admonition here to "buy quality, because it will last your entire liftetime", I present this poll....

Excluding shoes and hats (and gloves?) Can you fit into clothes that you bought "X" years ago?

X= 1?...3?...5?...10?...20 years or more?

Have you been the same size during that entire time, or does your size fluctuate, so that clothes you bought in 2005 might not fit in 2006, but might fit again in 2008?

I bought my first kilt about this time last year. It no longer fits me.

Forget about 10 years.

Yes and I do, most of them -- although pant size varies somewhere between 36-38; I have trousers in both sizes. One thing I like about my kilts is that it is easier to adjust the waist size an inch or two one way or the other depending on what "season" I'm in. I have clothes that are over twenty years old (good suits/jackets) and can still wear them. However, to be perfectly honest/complete -- about 15 years ago (and for about two years) I gained a bit more weight than usual and bought a really good kilt at that time. Since then I've returned to my "normal" weight and had to have it tailored to fit me now.

Below the waist, yes... but I'm wearing a bigger collar than before. Old and thick-necked, I guess!

Yes (I'm only 30 years old, though), everything with exception of my initial 1999 issue of U.S. Marine Corps Uniforms - as they were tailored-made and I was in crazy, phenomenal shape then (just after graduating from boot camp), I mean, we would make P90X look like a walk in the park!

10 years ago I was 430lbs, so yes, I, and most of my family members can all fit in them at the same time.

Yes, and in fact, I'm wearing a dress shirt today that I bought circa 1998. On random days of the week, I will also wear trousers and other shirts that were bought around that same period.

I also have a leather jacket that my late grandfather bought for me in 1992, which I still wear. Hard to believe it's a 20 year old jacket now! Same goes for my motorcycle jacket and chaps which I bought around 1994 when I got my first bike.

Most of my suits are between 6-12 years old, as I left my last "suit" job then. Barring one, which was really a very slim cut when I got it, I still fit in all of them. In fact, if I lose these last few pounds again, I can comfortably fit in my tux which is 17 years old.

Shoes, on the other hand (foot) have been a problem as I've gone up just over 1/2 size in the last few years.

Well, I know Alan specifically excluded shoes from the discussion, but since you brought it up, I've heard that it's normal for adults to need to step up in shoe size as they age. It has to do with the bones of the foot spreading out over adulthood, from years of standing on them. The feet actually get a tad longer and wider with age.

I've just re-arrived at the shape where I could fit into pre-2000 clothing, had I kept any of it. But when I left the corporate work world my wardrobe changed as well, and all those "power suits" finally went to Goodwill during my last big move from Los Angeles to San Diego. I do regret relinquishing a few of those things, such as some classic wool blazers, but overall women's styles change more quickly and drastically than do men's and much of that clothing would shout "1990!" were I to wear it today. You kilted guys have all the luck. . .
