Tartan of the Month - Feb 12: what do you see
Ok then. Here's something with an interesting story. Make the most of it as I'll be away for much of net month and so will probably not post anything until April.

I know very very little about tartan as of yet but I want to learn. So I will go first and make a fool out of myself and learn something. the photo is a bit blurry but I will do my best.
#1 The right hand edge was not ripped but cut.
#2 It looks like there is a selvage or sewing on the top and bottom. I can not tell exactly what it is.
#3 I am not sure but there could be a line of chain stitching on the right side to keep it from fraying as well, or it could be the beginning thread of a darker stripe.
#4 The selvedge edge seems to be very uneven and the tartan looks distorted.
That is all I can see so far.
What have I got wrong?

It's a piece of a blanket lying on a piece of a box.

I thought that was to act as some sort of semi-subliminal message... it may have worked that way on me, truth be told. ![Laughing](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)
At any rate, the top and bottom don't look like a selvage, to me, and the dark thread on the right edge seems to follow the lines of the tartan so well that I figure it isn't some kind of stitching; from this image, I think the piece is from the center of the cloth.
Since I don't know too much about this sort of thing either, I'm just guessing... the colors are faded a bit, perhaps? And when it was new, it was a bit more bold?
Heck, I don't know... just killing some time to let my hands rest from knitting, really. ith:

#1 The right hand edge was not ripped but cut. Yes
#2 It looks like there is a selvage or sewing on the top and bottom. I can not tell exactly what it is. Good - Sewing
#3 I am not sure but there could be a line of chain stitching on the right side to keep it from fraying as well, or it could be the beginning thread of a darker stripe. Well it's some sort of non-weaving strictch certainly but hard to say exactly what its purpose was
#4 The selvedge edge seems to be very uneven and the tartan looks distorted. What selvedge?
That is all I can see so far.

Heck, what could it be... A scrap left over from one of those deals they string between the drones on a set of pipes? The white stripe seems like it's centered pretty carefully.
How large is the piece, I wonder?
