Re: the most faded kilt ever??

Another thing to remember that not all the dyes used will age or fade in the same way, so it's almost impossible to say that "one" version of any faded/weathered/reproduction colourway is the correct one, or that one black from weaver will fade the same way as another black from another weaver.
It's much fairer to say that the mills who offer those colourways do so because there is a market for them, many of us really like the older and usually more subtle colours.
Of course if you really want a particular colourway of your own choice, it's fairly straightforward to get a weaver like Dagliesh to produce it specially for you, but remember it might take lots more time and money to produce!

So is there a way to fade a Tartan into a liter shade in a kilt ? with out hurting the kilt.

Sample : I have a Ferguson Ancient kilt the red line should be red but instead
they used bright Organge . I need to make the organge lighter .

I would try the UV light if the rambble thinks it would work.

See that on the eBay kilt, the black has faded to the orange/brown, while the greens and blues have stayed very dark.
Yet on the reproduction, the black is still black, the blue has been replaced by a much lighter, pale blue, and the green has turned to the orange/brown that we should see in the black.
OK, I gotcha. Good point. Where the "reproduction" colours go from green to brown, the actual faded kilt went from black to brown, with greens and blues staying dark.

Still, though, the overall effect is very similar!

I wish we could get a better-lighted picture of that faded kilt to see what it really looks like.

Just as a point of interest, any time you order a tartan in the "ancient" colors, the red will be rendered as orange. So if you don't like orange, avoid the ancient color scheme. Or, you could always do a custom run weave of your tartan using the ancient colors, but keeping the red a true red. It's been done before and looks pretty nice.

    Oh, definitely!
In all of this, I don't mean to put down the Dalgliesh reproductions - it's easily one of my favorite lines of tartan, and the palette is incredibly evocative of kilts like this that show their age.

Off topic here, but the alternative belt system on this kilt inspired me. I finally installed a fastener based on this style on my box pleated kilt after wearing it 9 days without one - http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...ml#post1063951

Exactly! That's what gives that faded portion such an odd effect... what was black has become the lightest portion of the ground.

Oh OK ,if it should be Orange then I am Ok with that ,I was just wondering.

I bought a tie in the ancient Ferguson and the red line is red. But if it needs to be Orange then I will get a different tie instead of changing the whole kilt.

I wonder if this was marketed as a weave done on purpose, how many people would just have to have one?

Well, I don't know if I'd bother getting a new tie over it. :-) My advice would be to not wear the tartan tie with the kilt anyway. (Though many do). I think a nice solid color, rep stripe, or other non-tartan pattern looks best with the kilt.
