Re: Want to setup a NAS

I bought an LG-NAS N2A2. 2T. RAID (but not 5 or hotswappable). Plug it into the network, install a bit of software, and you have a web server of your file system. OK, the web interface is something less than Windows Explorer, but for the occasional file while in remote parts of the world, it works fine from any Web Browser.

The backup software is too simplisitic. I haven't figured out streaming video or tunes yet, but it says you can do it.

Price is very right for home use.

As Joshua mentioned, freenas.org is a good resource. You also might want to check out Lime Tech's unRaid as well. http://lime-technology.com/

I'm a masochist so I rolled my own, but there are better options out there if you don't want to tinker extensively. And tinker I did. Three full array rebuilds, at about 12 hours each, due to my inability to quit messing with things.

Re: Want to setup a NAS

Well got the pieces in for the HTPC -

Box (even cooler in person, very steampunk) -

    New pieces -

Reclaimed pieces from the current HTPC -

Ready to go but for some cable management -

Looks like I will have room for a better CPU cooler, about 5" clearance. The board fan for circulating air will probably go as it is way to loud. Also will have to replace one of the new fans as I took off the wrong side. Right now the 140mm case fan is a out. The two front fans were going to be inwards but needed to trim the holes on one side to get them in and cut the wrong side off one. so I have a 140mm and a 92mm outward and a 92mm inward.

Tomorrow and Sunday will be spent setting up the OS, software and updates. Also seeing if all 3 HDDs work. I think one was a DOA but if not I will have to decide to either do a 3 drive RAID 5 but at a cost of performance, save up and get a 4th drive for a RAID 10, or just run 3 drives since I have plans to do the NAS for backing up all the machines in the house.

Will pick up a table for it to sit on next to the TV and a pack or two of blue or black cable ties to get the rats nest under control while running other errands this weekend.

That case looks a lot better than I thought it would. Very nice choice!

Good luck on the OS install and setup!

Re: Want to setup a NAS

Well it went so-so. Took about 30+ ties for cable control. Picked up a new fan and fixed the air flow issue.

Than moved on to the OS. Got everything setup but was noticing issues. Went through everything. Did all the patching and tweaking. Still issues.

Than I went to check the drivers to see if there was a conflict somewhere when I noticed that the version of Win 7 I loaded was 32 bit. Had to go out an pick up a 64 bit vesion and start over.

Got it up last night and started transferring all the data. Got the movies (500g) over onto the third drive. TV (900g) was already on the 2nd drive from the old machine. Tried to transfer the Itunes data via network but that failed due to the computers sleeping during the transfer last night. Got 2700+ items to move so I'll just copy them to a drive and do sneaker net.

After I got everything hooked up to the TV. I not only got rid of the voice/video lag I experienced with Itunes but I was shocked on how much better the picture was. Never realized how underpowered the old machine was.
