Re: Comparison on differnt kilt weights
Today I emailed Marton Mills to begin the process of getting different swatches in the different available wool weights along with the PV material in the tarton after Steve mentioned it would be quicker if I went to the source directly since Freedom Kilts does not have the "Spirit of Scotland" tarton on hand.
I'm believing that the PV is my ultimate low maintenance wash & wear material of choice for my application with the "perma-pleat".
I also learned that this kilt process takes a really, really long time from the beginning to the end! ....and I was hoping to place my kilt order in mid March (lol)

You can place an order any time you want. It's the waiting that takes a long time.

From what I understand of kilt making, the multiple layers of fabric are trimmed out of the fell when making a kilt, thereby avoiding the pillow effect.
Correct me if i'm wrong though.
Kilts, because some men need the extra room, and some men wear pants.

Re: Comparison on differnt kilt weights
kiltedinkansas is correct, the excess "bulk" is trimmed out and the area reinforced with a canvas to stiffen and support the inside of the fell. The canvas should be breathable, strong and I use horsehair canvas for strength and durability. The lining should also breathe. but looking you may still sweat a bit depending on what you do. If you lounge around looking good in the beer garden, not so much. If you're an athlete, bandmember or something like that, you're going to sweat in whatever you wear anyway!

I vote, for your first kilt; get a lighter weight than 16oz.
That can be your second kilt

Yes but consider that you still have a shirt, the kilt liner, the stabilizing fabric, the actual fabric of the kilt and a leather belt (2.25 inches wide) around your waist.

It's only the excess fabric that is trimmed out so that still leaves at a minimum three layers of wool tartan behind each pleat along the fell. Add to that the canvas and lining and you now have a minimum of five layers of fabric around your waist
