    cleaning a smudge

I have small "smudge" on a wool kilt that was caused by a pewter kilt pin rubbing against the wool. It is very small but now that I have upgraded to a better kilt pin it is noticeable (to me at least).
Any suggestions on how to get rid of it without causing any disasters to the kilt?

I had the same situation. It was a couple of years ago and don't recall what I did to lighten it, perhaps someone out there can enlighten us.

Sorry, I can't be of assistance; is there a way to subscribe to a thread without commenting? I had this same problem, and my drycleaner wasn't able to remove it. I'm interested to hear others' tips.

When I was in the RAF, we used to swear by a product called Dab It Off. The main ingredient was trichloroethene. I believe that it has been banned or discontinued for that reason.

It was used in the dry cleaning industry. Whether it still is still used, I don't know. All I know is that its cleaning properties on a uniform were somewhere between magical and miraculous.

    Regards

Completely off-topic, but as an apprentice machinist I used trichloroethane tapping fluid, worked beautifully, and I shudder to say it but I liked the smell! (some of our training films told us to use white lead as a lubricant too.)

Lighter Fluid... Ronson brand... NOT charcoal starter!!!!...is a great stain remover... I would try it on a hidden piece first... to see how color fast your material is.
