    Another: What tartan is this?

A casual acquaintance knows we are of Scottish Ancestry and gave me a rather large bolt of this tartan fabric. It is wool, a very loose weave and heavy but not really blanket weight. I don't recognize it and it could very well be a fashion tartan but I thought I would post it up to see if anyone identifies it.

    Thanks

You have much better casual acquaintances than I do.

    Could this be it?

Bingo! It's the Hunting MacPherson aka Badenoch tartan. ~7 inch sett, very nice. Looks to be tweed? Or maybe the black is just a nice marled charcoal gray yarn? Looks like it would make a really nice day plaid. Perhaps sell some to Kyle?

*** to David's ID of MacPherson Hunting. I can't recall ever seeing those particular shades before, so I don't think it was woven by one of the "usual suspects" recently. Does it feel like it could be a vintage length of cloth?

Yes it is indeed the MacPherson Hunting now that I have something to compare it to, Thank you.

It has a very rough tweedy feel to it and as I said is a rather loose weave. The dark is, in fact, a very nice dark charcoal grey and I like the softer blue with it. I have no clues to the age other than it originally came from an elderly woman who passed away and her niece, who gave it to us, said that it originally came from Scotland. IT is in very good condition with no holes or defects that I can see, so if it is old it has been well taken care of.

I have a friend who does the MacPherson tent here in New England. Looking back at some old photos I even have a picture of him in a kilt of the very same tartan, I just didn't recall it. He's had a rough go of it lately and is recovering from surgery so I will send it on to him to boost his spirits.

    Thanks all.
