I wish you well on your first X-Kilt. Here are a couple of tip that have helped me tremendously.
If you're using Alan H's X-Kilt instructions, he tells you to use chalk. I "stole" my daughter's kindergarten pencil sharpener to use on my chalk. Kindergarten because that's when they use those extra fat pencils. I the photo, "regular" pencil goes in the left hole, "fat, kindergarten" pencil goes in right hole.
When sewing the pleat edges, I use a fairly thick ruler fastened next to the foot. This keeps the stitch at a constant distance from the edge. (Taken from the woodworking side of my brain!) Of course, you have to make sure the pleat edge "rides" against the ruler for this tip to work.
