Re: A Modern-Day Duke in Scabal: His Grace the Duke of Argyll

You know, I favour plain black toe-cap shoes, but as regards the thickness of the sole, I weigh 215 lbs, and if I step on a small sharp stone I'd rather crush it than have it come up through a thick sole and cause damage to the shoe and damage and pain to the foot.

Therefore: I favour either a thick soft sole (which is very comfortable) or with a top-grain high quality shoe, I take the new shoes to the cobbler and have a second sole added between the original and the heel. Thus thick and safe and comfortable.

For some of our lighter folks, a thin sole may work. I wouldn't know - it's been decades since I was light.

Great points, Bill. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have well-made, comfortable hose/country socks preferably with a reinforced foot for added cushion.

    Thank you for sharing,

You're right -- I was just looking through Gainford for some inspiration, and that same or a very similar pattern appears there.

Amazon link for those not familiar with the book.

*eyes her stash yarn, wondering which color. . .* (no dusty pink on hand and not sure how it would work with Bob's available tartans)

Yes, precisely Timothy! His Grace is also a keen sailor.
