Thanks everyone, this has been enlightening.

I had noticed that the shooting sock garters I got on Ebay were too short to do any sort of fancy bow. I had figured 1) they weren't intended to do a fancy bow but rather to tie into a basic knot and 2) that I'm a "big fat American" and UK things are going to be tighter.

So I just tied them in a basic knot and thought no more about it.

Good to know that I can custom order extra-long garters from House of Cheviot.

What I had thought of, though, is just buying two pair and sewing them end-to-end to get super-long garters that I can tie in an elaborate knot and still have plenty to hang down.

BTW the older kilt hose garter flashes weren't elastic. I thought I had a photo of them but I can't find it.

They're a length of the red worsted wool tape (woven in a zigzag pattern) that you wrap around your leg and tuck in. They have the flashes sewn on just like modern elastic garters do. When you fold over the cuffs all you see are the flashes. I'm not sure when they went from this type to the elastic type.

I've seen at least one pair of this type in the STM, actually... mudeum, not gift shop, of course... wonder if someone might have the time to snap us a picture, or if there might even be a picture of that pair floating around already.

The whole procedure is rather less fraught than the way its done on an international website though.

Its more of a quiet, " its not done old boy", amongst friends sat around a fire with a glass of Scotland's finest grasped in the hand after a day's shooting.

On the other hand, those that "do" are usually at that time of day driving madly through the night to get to the next days shooting in their shiny, never been off the road, super, extra, traction controlled, sat-nav'd, fuel guzzling, somethingorother, 4wd, that the wife does the school run with at their home in Wimbledon, out of the shooting season and it would not even enter their head, that they(and the flashes!) were a topic of considerable discussion. Until they reach about the age of 70, when they then join the other camp!

Its been going on for years, in a good natured way and will, I am sure, never be resolved. In fact, I doubt if the two schools of thought on this weighty matter have ever actually discussed this particular subject face to face!

Thats rich Jock, "weighty matter", too funny. Thanks for giving me a good chuckle. I'll just stick to my goat collar garters and no flashes.

No, rondo, you're supposed to ask if the hose go over the plus fours, or if the plus fours go over the hose.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…
