Retail Kilt Shops in Glasgow
In the last few days I have been doing the rounds of kilt shops in Glasgow looking for a black shadow kilt.
Perhaps it is me but I have found that in many of the kilt shops, the help from sales assistant is fairly limited with to say the best, a cordial attitude.
Comparing these shops to the level of service in some of the more well known department stores, the level of service with the kilt retailer leaves a lot to be desired.
Slanj in the centre of Glasgow seemed to be the worst offender with the assistant being fairly unhelpful.
Am I alone in this feeling?

I agree. Compared to Edinburgh, some of the Glasgow shops I've been in have had a much lower quality of service.
Any time I've been in the ones here, the sales assistants are always very helpful, even if I'm just having a look around and not really intending on buying anything.
I've been to the Slanj shop in Glasga and two assistants basically ignored me while they had a conservation, then weren't much help when I asked about apsomething.

Check out the St. Kilda retail shop in Glasga. I am 99% positive that they hire the Black Shadow tartan and may have some old stock they're trying to turn over (sell as used). May be worth a phone call if not a visit.

Jimmy, try Slaters Menswear in Glasgow. They fall over you in an effort to help.
Had a tweed jacket and vest made in there not long ago and the boys in the Highland/Dress Wear section were brilliant.

Always had a good experience with McCalls in both Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Last time I was in Glasgow, 2007, I visited Slanj and thought the sales staff were just right: there to help when I asked, but not in my face when I was just browsing. Same with St Kilda near the George Cross underground station.

I was in Glasgow in August 2009 and Alex toured me around the shopping district a bit and I think we hit about 6 kilts shops within easy walking distance of one another, including Slanj and Hector Russell, but did not get to St Kilda as it was across the main highway and a good distance from the rest. Hector Russell seemed to have the most attentive staff, with the others being cordial and offering assistance and some pricing for requested items. Nobody really offensive or stand-offish, mostly some queer looks becausee two kilted guys walked into the shop (something I guess is not that common for them), and only the hector-Russell folks really jumped up and greeted us and seemed eagerr to assist. I had wanted to go to St Kilda as they have IMHO the best selection of in stock and clearence jackets/waistcoats, but they were just too far away from where we were to make it feasible, and I was already suffering severe jetlag from having just arrived from my transatlantic flight that morning.
Most of the places had some nice stuff (I was on a jacket hunt personally) but not a lot of stock, presumably expecting to do bespoke measurements and take orders for later delivery. A lot of beautiiful tweeds in their repertoire, however, and a few different styles, especially Slanj.

I was in Kilts 4 U, a fairly new shop near Partick Cross in the west end of Glasgow this morning, the service was fine, they did not have a Black Shadow but had a Black Isle and told me that they could have it made in a couple of weeks. The price was a bit high so I'll think about it.
I will contact St. Kilda tomorrow

I've found the staff in the Geoffrey Tailor shop to be friendly and they seem to have a lot of stock in (it's a big shop) including things from 21st Century kilts.
