Later I learned more about Amundsen, Scott's competitor in the race to the South Pole. Amundsen was far better prepared and experienced in very high latitude travel and as a result was successful.

Amundsen is perhaps best known for discovering the Northwest Passage but what isn't generally known is that he seems to have used that experience as a training ground for his trip to the south pole, wintering for two years in the Canadian arctic to learn about survival from the Inuit before completing the northern quest.

Scott was from Brunswick Maine

I think he was from Devon, in England. I can't say I know a lot about him, but I'm almost positive he wasn't from Maine.
