An amazing assortment of shirt styles of the past, including one that looks a bit like a "Jacobite" but with buttons, one with jabot and lace cuffs, and many, many more.

I like them but that like is a qualified one. I have two, one natural and one black and neither is cut to look piratey or flouncy. I would condsider them as stage three in my wardrobe, Prince charlie being stage 1, black tie no ruffs
Argyle being stage 2, more commonly with a tie than a bow tie
ghillie shirt seems a natural stage 3 and many many Scots I associate with are of the same mind. I would consider it before a normal shirt when kilted.
Never really considered a stage 4.

Like this you mean?? I'm not sure I could pull that off with a kilt. Not where I live anyway.

I for one do wear those shirts regardless of what you like to call them and I see nothing poofy about them. They are very loose fitting and hide a multitude of sins. I posted a photo of me in Gambia at Christmas wearing a black silk one and due to the heat I was glad as it kept me cooler than any other type of shirt.

I could go on about those that only wear them at Renfairs; you still wear them with the modern kilt and not the great kilt in most cases. The traditionalists will no doubt think nothing of wearing an animal sporran with the head of an animal that has never seen Scotland or any other country that claims to have invented the kilt.

Wear what you want as long as you feel comfortable and it does not ridicule the main garment ie THE KILT.

Properly speaking, they're called "plastron front shirts" (look it up) and they were extremely popular out West for cowboys, miners, etc as well as Back East for firemen and especially Baseball clubs, such as the Cleveland club in 1871

The "plastron" is a seperate piece of fabric which buttons onto the front of the shirt. It can be fully buttoned or left rakishly unbuttoned on one side, part of it hanging over sort of like a lapel.

Funny, I never thought about wearing a plastron shirt with the kilt...
    A stray thought.

How about a cross between a plastron shirt and a backless waistcoat.

Most mess-dress and white tie waistcoats are backless. One is not expected to remove ones jacket during the event.

Many of us aspire to a tartan waistcoat cut on the bias for formal events.

Stage one - make it like a mess-dress waistcoat with only a front.

Stage two - make it like a plastron shirt, with the waistcoat actually buttoned to the shirt front. If it was a little wider than pictured, so that it buttoned out of sight; if there were square cut (or matching) buttons; if there was a lapel added - would anyone know the difference?

I must admit that I haven't thought this through yet, but on the face of it, it should be possible to have (relatively cheaply) quite a few 'bias cut waistcoats'.

    Regards

    Chas

Funny enough just got an email that Celtic Croft has some jacobite shirts on sale 50% off!!!!
At fifteen bucks I think I'm gonna have to order a black one at least and maybe white too. Ha!
Actually, they list the original price as 49 bucks? That's actually MORE than 50% off so I'm not sure
why they said 50%. Weird. Anyway, I'm getting one and no, I'm not going to a Ren-Faire. *chuckle*

Thank you for posting that! If it's too small for Mickey, well at that price I suppose we can give it to CGR.

Right after nearly 3000 views, are we going to add Ghillie shirts to the rank of "traditional" highland clothes. tradition is defined as -

    tra·di·tion   /trəˈdɪʃən/ Show Spelled[truh-dish-uhn] Show IPA
    noun
    1. the handing down of statements, beliefs, legends, customs, information, etc., from generation to generation, especially by word of mouth or by practice: a story that has come down to us by popular tradition.
    2. something that is handed down: the traditions of the Eskimos.
    3. a long-established or inherited way of thinking or acting: The rebellious students wanted to break with tradition.
    4. a continuing pattern of culture beliefs or practices.
    5. a customary or characteristic method or manner

To me the ghillie shirt fulfills some of the above criteria.

So whether we like it or not the Ghillie shirt should be an acceptable form of dress.
