I have bought my passes and booked a room in Boone. I am planning on attending all four days. For those concerned it's not that far of a drive from Boone to the bus shuttle parking at the foot of the mountain. If I remember correctly the volunteer fire department drives the busses up and down the mountain all day long.

Ok , let me see if I have this right I rent a hotel in one of the local areas and drive to the bus stop at the bottom (Parking ?? ) alot or no ? then I pay to ride the bus to the games . then that evening I pay to ride the bus down to my car . and drive back to the hotel -Right ? sounds good to me. I just found out that I need to go for the Ferguson AGM . So I am a little confused on the whole hotel to games thing .
Do you think there are any rooms left any where ?

Pretty much right. Note that if you buy the four day pass, the bus rides are included. Good Luck on finding a room!

If you buy a Patron's Pass, you get to park at the top of the mountain. The pass comes with four tickets and parking; I split a pass with a friend, and we take turns driving. It is worth looking into if you have four people.

WOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just made reservations for the Grandfather Mountian Games. My wife and I will be staying at the Pinnacle Inn Resort (very good price's) and there are still rooms to rent as of today 05-11-12 .
I am excited , we have never been to the Grand Father Games.
Anyone ever stayed there ?

Ok I called the Grand Father Mt. phone number # 1-828-733-1333 and asked about the bus serivces cost . They said $5.00 one way per person per day -so $10.00 round trip from parking lot to the games and back per day.
SO $20.00 a day for two people per day round trip .
I am going two days with my wife. I am looking at $40.00 just to get from the parking lot to the games for two days.
Does this sound right ?
Still will be cheaper then a $200.00 Patron pass.
I geuss this is a small price to pay to ride up the mt. instead of walking it .LOL

Oops, I misremembered what I had posted. Mr. Jones had said they usually don't have a recital during the GMHG. Reason is some of the instructors are the piping and drumming judges at GMHG, and there isn't enough time to run back to Valle Crucis to do a recital. Sorry for the mistake.

I don't remember ever paying for the return trip. It's always been $5 for the round-trip.

My wife and I always stay there, as do several friends, which makes for good parties. It is quiet and the views of the mountains are fantastic. Bring a sweater or light jacket; some years it gets quite cool, though some years it is rather warm. Cell phone reception can be iffy on the mountain, but the big rocks near the reception building seem to provide better reception, and you will sometimes see several people there catting on their phones.
