I second the Leatherneck tartan. It is fantastic -- in fact, I am wearing mine at work as I type this message.

    .
A perfect example. I have the leatherneck and love this kilt. Being Canadian, I have no affiliation to the MC but when I do wear it, I wear it with respect, as I do with all my kilts.

Unless it's restricted, wear what you like!!

Your own clan tartan or a so-called "fashion" or regional tartan, or a so-called "universal" tartan are all good. I personally avoid tartans with which I can make no claim whatever except in fantasy. Seems a bit pushy to me.

Turn about... I bought some very inexpensive Royal Canadian Navy PV for my first DIY kiltmaking "practice kilt". I served in the US Navy, and knew and served with some fine RCN folks at one point but was not attached to their unit. It is a beautiful tartan and brings back some strong and cherished memories. I don't wear it to Games or other Scottish-oriented public functions; but I do wear it often, with pleasure, around town or to informal family occasions. It is much more attractive than the US Navy tartan.

I don't worry about the tartan police, but some respect, discretion and sense of good taste go a long way, IMHO.

Does this mean that you feel fashion, regional, or universal tartans are somehow incorrectly or falsely termed? Or just not as legit as clan tartans? I would assert that that some of them have better of at least older pedigrees than many clan tartans do.

I think you may be referring to the so-called or quotations, so not at all, just that the terms are sometimes used interchangeably or erroneously. Because of the nature of their registration and heritage, the tartans are always used correctly.
