Wear what you like as it is not too far off the mark from my limited POV. I would shape it a bit more, though.

I would vote "no'' to the Army Issue Beret, it looks just like what it is/was& and seems odd with a kilt & kit.
If you can sew even a little, Smoke & Fire Company sells the pattern to make a Scots Bonnet. And you can make in wool, linnen, or ? to suit.
For the histoical records, there are Basque Berets, French Berets & Chinese Commy made US Berets; the Scots Bonnet is of the same family, but each are different, & look different.

I wear a maroon beret with an EGA on it when the mood strikes me. I have worn it on Fort Meade, where I work, and gotten nothing but compliments from the many Airborne types running around loose there. As someone has said, it's just a hat. Now wearing the flash/crest, (or for that matter an EGA) without earning it? That would be another issue.

Yes, you are correct. And it (both the title of U.S. Marine and the actual EGA) is earned upon completion of enlisted boot camp or officer candidate school. Every recruit/officer candidate must earn the title of U.S. Marine, it is never awarded or simply given.

If you were to add a torrie/pom pom/bobble in, let us say black wool and a clansman's crest badge and wear the badge between your left eye and ear - no one would ever question it.

I have 3 Rasta Berets, 2 military style Berets, and 2 Balmorals. They all work well with the kilt. 99% of the people out there won't know the difference. The Rastas work well in the summer heat as they are crocheted cotton, the others [all wool] in fall, winter, and spring. I think the maroon color works well with your kilt.
