I never wear chains, not even for formal. A strap every time.

This is me on St Andrew's night last year.

Notice the strap and notice that it is buckled just in front of my right hip. The strap end is tucked behind the sporran. Two distinct advantages.

Firstly, if I have to adjust the height of the sporran it can be done at any time. When dancing, a sporran can bounce around. I have adjusted the height in mid dance, without losing a step.

Secondly, the sporran can easily be slid along the strap on to my left hip. A requirement for close dancing, or sitting down to dinner, or driving, or when access is required for any other reason. One hand movement and it is out of the way, another and it is back.

How any of this is done with chains and a buckle in the middle of your back - well I don't know.

    Regards

    Chas

I too prefer leather straps, Chas, and that is usually what I wear, but for very formal occassions, I do like to wear a chain-link(different from the standard version that run rampant today) made of sterling silver from Ian Grant of Edinburgh. This is the only 'chain-strap' that I own.

    Cheers,
