Interesting thought, guess I'll take the 4 yard choice into my consideration as well though I think I'm leaning more towards a trad 8 yarder.

Johnny, I don't think you should be so concerned about what tartan is most proper to wear or what your friends and clan member will say if you wear the one or the other tartan. In basic you can wear what ever tartan you like. You have to feel it in your heart which tartan is the right one without thinking of what others might think. If you have a swatch of the Sinclair tartan you may find samples of the romsdal tartan at Husfliden so you can compare. just remember that the fabric they use at the Husfliden is a very different quality than the one from Dalgliesh. You should also check out the size of the Romsdal tartan set. I belive that the set is a bit smaller on the bunad fabric than on the kilt fabric.
You are talking about visiting the Caledonian Society, which Society are you thinking of? NLoken and I are members of the Caledonian Society of Norway, are you a fellow member? If not, you are welcome anytime. Just contact NLoken or me and we invite you to on of our meetings.

Of course, as the Romsdal tartan would be a custom weave, he can specify whatever sett repeat size he wishes.

Great idea Oddern, why didn't I think of going to the local husfliden to compare the Sinclair swatches with the Romsdalen fabric, wish I had a DC Dalgliesh Romsdal tartan swatch though.
I have nocticed that the Romsdal tartan sett is smaller in its bunad version as its ment to be used in waistcoats, I wish there was a swatch with bigger sett available so I could see the visual difference, but thanks again for the husfliden idea.
As for the Caledonian societies I was thinking about checking out what the Caledonian Society of Norway in Oslo was all about as I've heard nothing but praises about "the cally" every time I've been at the Dubliner in Rådhusgata for a dram or a pint, a good conversation and great music. I'm not a fellow member, but I do appricate the warm welcome and invitation and I'll remember to contact one of you guys about the society when I feel I have the time to attend a meeting. As of now I'm using lots of my time gathering familly documents in order to obtain my clan Sinclair membership. When I look at the constitution of the caledonian society I see that membership is seperated into three categories: 1) Scottish nationals. 2) Norwegians with Scottish antecedents or associations. And 3) At the discretion of the Committee, Norwegians and other nationals especially interested in Scotland and her culture. By Scottish associations do they mean clan association memberships or is just enough have a geographical/historical association?

I LOVE my Sinclair hunting Locharron, made up by John at Keltoi. Box pleat, 16 oz. I'll get a picture up when I get it back from having the buckles moved - I lost over 25 lbs.!

That's good news, I was thinking that the small sett would look (to me) weird on a kilt.

Good for you, please upload a picture of it when you get it back, is it the ancient or modern version?

I belive that by association they mean if you have lived in Scotland, studied or worked there. I think that the clan membership may go under the antecedents term. To become a member you also have to attend a minimum of two meetings and be "sponsored" by two member. The first regular meeting is the whisky tasting i end of September.
For a small fee you can order a swatch from Scotweb and other vendors.

Just a word of caution or advice, you can only order a swatch from tartans that are normally held as stock by the weavers, sometimes they have samples of other ones, but in the case of Dalgleish it's unlikely.
One of the problems with the new images on the Dalgleish website ( and also by extension on the Scotweb site) of all the tartans is a perception that they weave everything that is pictured, sadly that's not actually true, what they can do is to weave anything requested, so although it is really great to see all the tartan images in the same format in an easily searchable way,it is still hard to be able to make the final decision based on a computer generated image.
This isn't to say that there is anything wrong with using the Dalgliesh tartan viewer, it's just worth while remembering that it is only another list of tartans possible, not actually a list of stock lines.
