A Tilley hat for eight dollars! You should have bought a lottery ticket too.
The regarding diced hose tops as formal must be a cultural thing - I 'see' them as sporty - elderly gents on cycles with long shorts and hose still usually have patterned tops to the hose - one of my collection of old bought patterns shows a young man with a cycle and gives variants of cabled and patterned tops.
