Tartan of the Month - Jul 12. What do you see?

This is the penultimate TOM so make the most of it. There are other things that I want to concentrate on so just one more after this.

Right off the bat (from a pure amateur)... Lovely old tartan. Reverse twill band at the selvage.

That's a herringbone selvage, characteristic of Wilsons of Bannockburn, so I would venture that this is an example of their work.

Also, the reflection of the photographer's hand tells us it's somewhere under glass. :-)

Nice tartan! I like it.

Let's see. Single worsted based on the hole there in the upper left. What colour were the stripes in the green blocks originally? Yellow? They have faded terribly and are hardly visible in the left portion of the tartan. The weaving looks even so would it be safe to say that this is commercially woven?

Commercially woven tartan might be even , but then so might handwoven, look at some examples of Peter's weaving to see how even that is!

I wouldn't have said that this was particularly even though, of course if it's an old sample we don't how it was kept, whether it has been soaked and not dried and pressed well.
