I want to make a sporran! But I need help.

All the ones I've seen patterns from average about 8 to 10 inches wide by about 9 to 11 inches tall plus the flap or cantle! Would love to see a chain mail one!

I see a couple of glaring problems there. The weight would be horrendous, and the chain links rubbing against the kilt fabric would be like sandpaper.

The pattern sizes might be in that range, but the finished size of the average sporran is considerably smaller. Most average roughly around 8" high by 6" wide.

I am planning on doing one out of galvanised steel first then ordering aluminium for the final one

I'm planning, or plotting, my next sporran to make from scratch. Very very casual for dad. He just ordered his first kilt and likes the black canvas sporran I made before, pics are on my profile. He was an old soldier in the army, so I want to make it look like it belongs with us army fatigues (the old green work uniform, like in mash) so the plan is green canvas, his rank sewn on the center of the flap, 2 dog tags as tassle and a Web belt or braided 550 cord for the strap.

I'm working on making a tartan sporran that matches my moggins, I am going to use burnt leather for the flap. As to the chain maille one; if I were you (Talking as a maille period reenactor here) definatly get riveted aluminum links. I use the real maille for my armor, but I have seen non-combat persons at fairs and such in aluminum maille and the un riveted variety tends to fall apart because it has little to no tensile strength. The weight of the maille itself will split the rings. The steel one, even with the lighter galvanized steel will still be a bit heavier than one might like and would be very uncomfortable to wear. Either way have fun.
