I got an economy kilt last year and it can be worn dressed up.

Ok, it doesn't have the weight and full swing of say, a 13oz 8yd, but by matching the accessories - sporran, hose, etc., with an Argyll vest, it can look quite dressy.
If I can find the pics of our New Year meal out, I'll post one.
