Sure, if you're talking about a bright paisley or polka dot silk number, but in this context I believe a formal black bow tie would be quite appropriate and not the least bit curmudgeonly, even for a youngster like yourself.

I have been fortunate never to have seen a black bow tie worn during the day, except by servants. It's just one of those things that just isn't done. Black four-in-hand ties, black string ties-- yes, but save the black bow ties for evening dress.

I agree, Chas. Silver would be very nice and quite appropriate also. My point was that a bow tie is not strictly for senior citizens.
