    Hello guys!

Thanks for your opinions. I had exactly this impression...measuring is a think to be experienced in.
So it'll be thrilling to see what will b done of my measuring.

    @riverkilt...
yeah, I agree but a kiltmaker is hardly to find in Germany.
The only one I know is in my hometown Hamburg, he learned in the british army and is supposed to be excellent but he's a bit over my budget at the moment.
So usually you have to order in the internet or go to a shop for bagpipe supplies but they order the kilts abroad theirselves...

Last May I visited the shop of a bagpipe supply vendor near Heidelberg.
There they measured me but I had the impression they wanted the kilt longer than me...so I have slight impression of my dimensions...:-)
Ideally I am going for an 8 yard heavyweight Smith modern because my name is Schmidt. I also like MacDonald ancient or Black watch ancient.
But maybe I should start with a 5 yarder...as basic equipment.
Fabric should be Jura by MM or Strome by Lochcarron.

As you are on a budget you may want to take a look at tartan4less. they are doing made to measure 5 yarders in 16oz Lochcarron strome for £179.00 some of our members have bought kilts from them and have been impressed with the quality.
Not as good as one to one with your kiltmaker but much cheaper.

Thanks Grizzly that's a very good tip...I was thinking of Tartanweb, they offer machine stiched 5 yarders from 142 GBP...depending on the fabric, Lochcarron Strome is about 180 GBP and they don't have any shipping costs. Delivery at Tartan4less seems to be very fast!

From what I can see most tartans from tartanweb add another £100 or so. With tartan4less it's £179 whatever tartan you choose. Worth a gamble for a major saving. Saying that I would go for a named kiltmaker for a 8 yarder tank.

Good luck with whatever you choose and don't forget to post pics so that we get our kilt fix.

I will not contradict any one here, but will add this -

Get Someone Else To Measure You!

I find that weather it's a four yard kilt or an 8/9 yard kilt I wear them all at the same point, which is half way between the top of my hip bones and my lower ribs. Some kilt makers use this tip: feel the top of the hip bone and measure two inches above this point, then take the measurement from here down to the knee (finish where you want the kilt to hang to.) But of course, measure as instructed by the kiltmaker (if they are not able to do it for you.)
    Good luck.
The Kilt is my delight !
