I had a very scientific approach to my tartan. I did my family research and found I'm mostly English and German - so I picked a tartan that somewhat matches the school colors of where I'm from (McPherson, KS). Originally I thought I'd go with MacPherson for that reason, but I really like the Black Stewart tartan and my Highland Games hero is Ryan Stewart, so I'm all set!

    Its so easy....ONE OF EACH!

Why not start with the Clark? Click the USA Kilts button above to see the tartan if you haven't already.

Then add as your finances allow...

Hi, Turbodog – having a German surname myself, I find myself in a position similar to yours.
I currently have two kilts, both in tartans made in South Africa – one is in a South African-designed sett that symbolises the Christian Faith, while the other is in a Scottish-designed sett based on the flag of an African country.
But I also have a Scottish connection, and hope shortly to be the owner of a kilt in my clan tartan.
I would say that Ron (Riverkilt) has an excellent suggestion in proposing that you wear a kilt in Clark tartan.
You could also look at the various American tartans that symbolise German heritage, as well as the Germany tartan (with the colours of Germany’s flag) or the Coburg tartan, long used as a national tartan for Germans with Scottish affiliations.
Then there are the many North American tartans representing states of the US and provinces of Canadam, as well as districts within those states/provinces – pick the one closest to where you live.
Few people can afford to buy more than one kilt at a time, so you will have to make a selection.
But the beauty of being employed is that you will, sooner or later, be able to afford another, or even several.
The choices are legion, but pick one that seems most appropriate.
    Go for it!
    Regards,
    Mike
