Thanks for prompt reply Jock. Now back to thread, normally I wear a kilt for weddings or other celebrations, and so she is dressed elegantly.Its important I think not to overshadow your wife at such times ,I think, though its hard in a kilt , so I try to be as casual as possible . I actually prefer to wear my kilt at golf dinners and the such,when the wife is absent.

CMcG, are those worker boots in your last pic? That's what I'm looking for. I think the dress shoes I own are too 'dressy' for daywear. Your girlfriend looks lovely in each picture by the way. You look good together

My wife has only lately started wearing plaid herself after attending her first ceilidh last November.

She tends to dress to suit the occasion, so if I'm casual, she'll wear jeans or a 'normal' skirt, for 'semi-dress', she may wear a kilt skirt (and is looking to start making a few), and for formal, she wears a dress she's normally made herself, that compliments my attire.

She has asked about sashes (nice early hint for Christmas), so I'm planning on buying a couple for her, and just hope she buys her own broach instead of 'borrowing' mine...

And agree, CMcG's wife is rather eye catching. Was he in those pics?

Those are Canadian army, surplus, parade boots. The older style had a smooth leather sole and the newer style that I'm wearing have a Vibram sole with good grips. They were really well polished until we tromped around in the fields for a couple hours and got them all dusty

I more commonly wear the brogues you can see in the three other three daywear/non-formal pictures. They have a chunky rubber sole, which helps to keep them from looking "too dressy," even though I keep them well polished.

My wife always asks me which kilt I plan to wear to an event. She doesn't try to be all matchy-matchy, but she does try to colour-coordinate so we don't clash together.

Agreed here as my girlfriend and I will make sure we are not clashing or mixing the same colors too much. Seems odd I started wearing kilts with different color hose and such and we now worry about that. One phone call before a night out usually is all it takes. She wears the flowing (sometimes called broom skirts) skirts that are most colorful usually so I try to not match or clash. When she wears a black dress Im pretty free to do what I please. If she is in green, it may be weathered Mackenzie kilt and burgundy kilt hose. If she is in here claret dress Ill work on greens or blues with tweed brown kilt hose. We usually look pretty good together, Ill attribute that to her improving my looks by being with me. The one skirt I cant even worry about planning for is one she made for winter which is like a patchwork quilt. Too many fabrics, colors and such to worry about.

Here are several visual examples of what my lovely wife, Stephanie tends to wear when I am in Highland attire. Naturally, Stephanie will wear clothing according to the level of formality, but she almost always prefers to be comfortable and relaxed - even in the most formal of occassions.

I can only recall two times my wife has accompanied me while I'm kilted, and she wore what she would have ordinarily have worn, with nothing "Scottish" about it.

Many years ago I had a girlfriend who played Scottish fiddle and we attended many Scottish-themed events (Highland Games, Country Dances, concerts, etc) together and she usually wore a kilt, velvet vest, and lace blouse (formal things) or plain blouse (informal things).

My hat is off to those who have included pictures in this thread – some very classy outfits there (and I mean both what the kilted men are wearing and the complementary outfits their ladies have on).
Colin (CMcG), I especially like your lass’s ventures into wearing tartan, especially her skirt in the Chinese sett (is that Chinese Scottish?).
I cannot fault the choices of Fiona, Lady MacGregor, nor of Stephanie Smith and Matt Newsome’s lovely wife. I do believe Lady MacG is wearing the same hat in both outfits – with different tartan sashes around the crown to match her own and Sir Malcolm’s sett of the day.
I wish I could say my wife joined in the spirit of tartan-wearing, but she has an almost curmudgeonly attitude. She no longer wears skirts or dresses (she says pants suit her girth better), and while she does wear shawls that potentially could be tartan, the only one she actually wears that is tartan-ish is in a rather unattractive fashion tartan in black (mostly), grey and white with a narrow red stripe. I have bought her a pashmina in the Namibia tartan, but she complains that it is not warm enough.
Perhaps she will change her tune in time to come.
