I have a friend who thought is was funny to ask "the question" so I turned the tables on him. Whenever I saw him, especially if he was with people, I'd lean in and ask him "so, what do you Sassenachs wear under your Jeans?". Inevitably the people with him would be confused and look at him and he would have to explain why I was asking such an impertinent question. To which they would look shocked and usually tell him he'd been rude and deserved to be embarassed. I didn't have to do it too many times before he got the idea.

On another thread a kiltie reported getting on an elevator and just as a guy wearing jeans and cowboy boots started to ask "where's your bagpipes?" he cut him off and looking wildly around asked "Damn the bagpipes! Where the hell did you leave your cows!?" I've been waiting for chance to use that one myself.

I usually just look at the crotch of the guy in question and say "Poor little guy." And then I walk away. Most of the time, I get spluttering as a retort. :butt:

And there's my personal favorite- "You laugh at me because I'm different. I laugh at you because you're all the same."
