Actually, I think I misspoke. I believe I paid 7 bucks not 8. Said hat is currently in the washer thrashing about on the heavy setting to remove some of that vulgar newness. I may then drag it around the concrete a bit and wash it again just for good measure.

Your brush country kit looks just fine to me. Personally I'd use a lovat green or lovat blue hose tops so that they didn't stand out so much to the eye. However, it is your style, and as you said diced hose are pretty traditional with the fighting units. Overall it looks like a right proper kit for your conditions.

As for the Tilley hat, I love mine. I actually got mine replaced last fall when I literally wore through my first one. I work outdoors as a land surveyor and construction inspector, so mine gets used from spring until late in the fall or early winter every year. Tilley replaced it for free, and even told me that for return postage they'd send back my original to me if I wanted to keep it!

if I were you I'd get a higher pair of goaters for rattlers ..you migth be on an incline and rattler might catch you closer to the knee .

Well, after spending nearly two days digging in the heat, I decided to take a break and kilt up for the afternoon. Unfortunately, it looks like we're going to have to put down one of my horses due to medical issues, so I was digging a horse-sized grave. It's touch-and-go right now, but at least if we have to make the hard decision, the hole is there. Lord, I hate digging.

Uh, anyway, here's my second take on summer rugged outdoor wear. Thankfully, we had a "cool front" that knocked our temperatures down from 102 degrees to a chilly 94 degrees. But still, even though it's more pleasant outdoors today, it's still a tad warm. So what I've got on now are cotton hose (from sockdreams.com) with my boots and WWII leggings. The same 4-yard wool box-pleated kilt for hot weather, a thin ventilated "fishing shirt" (with vents behind the front pockets as well as behind the shoulder blades - very cool and comfortable), and the "air-flo" Tilley hat. I chose to go sans belt for additional cooling effect.

I gotta say, for being outside in the heat while wearing a kilt, it doesn't get much cooler than this unless I were to wear sandals (which I won't).

I have one of those shirts with the mesh vents. Your's looks sharp...mine is made of a wanna-be synthetic linen type thing that wrinkles horribly if you move after putting it on. Where did you get yours? I'm in the market for a few in a more user friendly material for next year's sweltering summer, but haven't had much luck. (Plus, this is when all that stuff is on the cheap!)

I like the look and understand why some lean toward the wide brim hat, but, this is a personal choice and understand there are time the ball cap is more practical.
