Could a kilt be worn with a Nehru jacket?
This one's mainly for the "contemp" forum crowd.
Just the gears turning... Having some random thoughts and pondering new styles and ways to wear a kilt. Anyone suppose that a Nehru jacket, or perhaps just a jacket with a Mandarin collar could be altered to be worn with a kilt? We've all seen standard suit jacket --> kilt jacket conversions by shortening the bottom. But I wonder how it would look if it were done with something like this photo shows. (Not necessarily in white, though).

Comments? Ideas? Opinions?

I think it would look good , Maybe a little short -as not to hide the kilt apron to much.
But yea , go for it .

Definitely contemporary! It might work, even with the length, because of the opening that's shown in the picture. I've tried it with a Chinese silk jacket, which is shorter, just for fun. That style fastens all the way down the jacket. No sporran, though.

Short answer.....yes.
Have your jacket cut shorter in length. (approx. the same length as the sleeves)
Then do a small cut-away in the front to accommodate the sporran.
And Bob's your Uncle.
I'm thinking keep the overall white but do it in a fabric with Gold and Black dragon embroidery.

Busboy jackets and waiter's jackets are available that are short enough to wear with a kilt without any alterations.

However, the Nehru jacket may be of better quality and last longer.

I like it, too, JD, but perhaps with something like a Freedom Kilt or R-Kilt where you could add pattern to the jacket without it interfering with the tartan of the kilt. You could get away without a sporran if you had integral pockets. I don't think I would shorten it much; too like a chef's standing-collar jacket with no fitting to the waist.
If you haven't already done so, check out Lord Jamie Semple's jacket as he wore it during the 2009 Gathering.

You might want to nip the waist in slightly to get a better shape to it...

The standing collar for men's jackets has always been distinctive. Our brethren who have served in the United States Marine Corps have been pulling it off brilliantly for generations. I would think a "Nehru type Jacket" could work very well with a kilt. I say "Nehru type" because, to my eye, the Nehru jacket is too long to be worn with a kilt.
Might it not also help to frame the clerical collar for those who wear both the collar and the kilt?

It's actually been done already. See this discussion. The Iona jacket appears to be just a kilt-length version of the jacket you're showing there.
Not to mention, this type of collar seems to have enjoyed a brief surge in popularity with kilted gentlemen in the late 1800s to early 1900s. From the photos I recall, they would typically button the top of the jacket just under the collar, and let the lower portion open up around the sporran.
*edited to add:
Here's a photo of British actor Seymour Hicks wearing something very similar to what we're talking about (I'm guessing this photo is from 1920-ish?). I can't tell from the small size of the photo, but this may just be an unbuttoned doublet. Still, it's the same effect with the Nehru collar. This was posted in the vintage kilt photo thread.

And here's a photo of another jacket with what appears to be this same style collar, albeit it has gauntlet cuffs. The date is supposedly from the 1860s. Also from the vintage kilt photo thread.

Some folks don't like the look but I do...if I were to make a change it would be to lose the satin trim on this corduroy jacket or go with a black wool for a dressier look.
