As has already been mentioned, some of the traditional doublets have standup/mandarin/Nehru collars, so I don't think it would be much of a stretch to use that style for a contemporary kilt jacket.
I've been thinking about this one that I found on eBay, which is shown with pants but is short enough to be worn with a kilt:

I bought 2 off ebay. I'm using one for material to do the cuffs and possibly redo on the pocket flaps. I,ll probably add a few more buttons on the front also. These were ex-tuxedo hire jackets and were 18 pounds each. Very reasonable and in good condition.
By the way, the coats were made by Magee.

how about one of these union civil war repro officer shell jackets:

the single breasted jacket looks a lot like the pics tobus posted, and on ebay can be had for about $58.

I think it could work, but one would have to be careful to avoid a mashing of styles such that it looks like a historical anachronism or a costume... unless that is the desired look Perhaps take a Confederate shell jacket, slap some Celtic buttons on it, and wear it with otherwise traditional kilt attire?

"mashing of styles" and costuming are my main concerns. i saw that other thread before, also. i think the single breasted has a better shot with different buttons.

If the jacket in question were black, and had some tashes around the tail of it, and a whole raft of buttons sewn on the front, it could qualify as a Sheriffmuir doublet. Here's Kinloch-Anderson's picture of one, shown in purple.

the same observation/criticism would apply to any nehru type jacket in this thread. i am not pretending either is a doublet or highland traditional wear. i am debating whether it would be ok for contemporary wear, in the "new traditionalist" spirit.

I think so. A re-purposed Confederate shell jacket would look a lot like an 'Iona' or 'Ben Dubh' jacket, which definitely fits the new traditionalist spirit:

post 21 by oddern of his friend in the dunad jacket got me thinking along this line. http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...61/index3.html
also a member made an xkilt and double breasted waistcoat that got me thinking that the look reminded me of firefly: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...nk-ball-76026/

yes, i have a charcoal tweed argyle and waistcoat for highland traditional. but most of the time, i am kilted casual. this evening i wore a stillwater black leather kilt jacket for a get together. i am just considering another outfit option.

oops-i forgot to mention that rondo's jacket came out well. i followed that thread, also
