How did it come about the the South Island ending up having a much stronger Scottish presence than the North Island?

I saw a very interesting video about the history of the South Island and what I found especially interesting was that they had a Gold Rush very much like California's 1849 Gold Rush, but somewhat later in time. As I recall this was on the West Coast of the South Island. The same sort of things happened with Boom Towns and sudden wealth and broken dreams and all.
