Hunting Stewart: a Universal Tartan?
I was curious if the Hunting Stewart tartan could be considered a "universal tartan" akin to the Royal Stewart tartan?
Looking forward to knowledgeable replies! ![Smile](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Yes. In fact I would say there is more of a claim for Hunting Stewart to be considered a universal tartan than the Royal Stewart.
The Royal Stewart (as implicit in the name) is really a royal tartan, meaning that it is associated with the Royal Family. Today is is considered a universal tartan more or less by general usage. It is so commonplace to be ubiquitous.
But the Hunting Stewart, for whatever reason, has always been regarded as a universal tartan for those without a clan tartan of their own.

I believe that Queen Anne said " That all my loyal subjects may wear my Royal Stewart tartan"

It would seem, then, that this license would exclude those of us who have removed ourselves as loyal subjects of Queen Anne, King George III, and their successors.

Well there you go, a very good point there. Some of you colonials are disadvantaged by all that independence malarkey, I just knew there would be some merit in the status quo-----eventually! Still, you win some and, you lose some!

Queen Anne died in 1714. The Royal Stewart tartan seems to date from the early nineteenth century. Perhaps you meant a different queen?
