Looking at a few unrelated forums I visit. One had a forum called The Counter - the implication that you're chatting with a storeowner over the counter - shooting the breeze. Its labeled, "The off topic, social part of the forum."
Another forum has "The Lounge" where the rule is "This area is for relaxing and discussing issues for any subject on your mind, so long as it is in good taste." Recent topics included the Russian submarine cruising in the Gulf of Mexico, Neil Armstrong's passing, recipe for a homemade ant killer, and celebrity birthdays. Seems much like our Misc forum save for the Russian sub story.
Another has an Off Topic forum and even a Politics forum with the heady warning,"Anything to do with politics. Only for thick skinned. There will be strong opinions here. ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK."
The Off Topic forum is labeled, "Anything NOT related to [forum focus] This can be about sports, jokes, anything that stays within the rules of the site.
Not saying we should have a politics thread - just sayin that other forums recognize that when adults assemble there will be other things to discuss beyond their common interest and its nice to have a safe venue for that.

You are the one who brought this to the thread but I don't want to be insensitive to you. I'm going to leave it up to you if you want to discuss this in public or via PM.
Let's go with PM.

Both of the other forums I frequent have similar sections. It is human nature I think to look for common ground beyond the kilt (here for instance) that others members might have in common.
I am kind of curious to know how much of the total bandwidth of the internet is taken up by such stuff. The main thing is I don't see any benefit in pressuring Steve to buy more bandwidth. The global market for all things kilt related is pretty small, compared to, well lots of other products. Shoes, mens neckties, sneakers. So "we" the kilt wearing community 'need' a certain amount of bandwidth to set a good example, but that bandwidth is paid for by a very few supporting vendors selling an already expensive product.
We already have a pub that I don't frequent, and an off topic section. Enough already I say.
EDIT: No offense Ron. I wasn't trying to pick on you, where I am coming from is I feel Steve is trying to do a legitimate public service, where lots of other forums (I think) are just trying to generate revenue.

Not being a techie, had no clue about the bandwidth stuff. Certainly don't think Steve should spend more money to add non-kilt related stuff.
I don't personally feel the need. I'm seldom on Misc and even less on the pub since I got sober. Just sayin' other forum's have them for whatever reason and agree with you folks with common interests often wanna know more about friends they meet.

Gotta say, "anyone else" is a whole lot different than a Troll. Maybe "anyone else" has a little more respect coming to them and their opinion should be considered as well as yours since I'm assuming you are not a troll.

Making no change at all is certainly an option. But then, according to the rules, all threads in Miscellaneous and The Pub must be kilt-related! (How that's going to work when discussing your latest micro-brew discovery is beyond me...! )

Ok , I did not start this thread , even though my post is the one on top ,It was pulled in from another. But I am saying that if we change the rules to help people follow the rules
What makes us think they will follow the new rules. ? and every debat has to have two sides
of the story , most times a PRO and a CON .
But none the less it should all ways be about (Kilts ) un less it is in a Mess. thread .
I may look like a troll but I do not think myself as a Troll .

Thomas, I've edited this thread now to show it was opened by me with citing it was moved for a discussion of Rule 12 from another thread by Steve. I hope this resolves your concern.
