When wearing pants belts and braces/suspenders are designed for the same purpose, to hold the pants up. However, the belt is, or at least should not be, used to keep the kilt up. The belt worn with a kilt is designed to suspend dirks, pouches and shiny buckle from. If you are wearing braces and want to carry a dirk or a pouch it may be appropriate to wear both braces and a belt.
Is the opinion that braces and suspenders look sill a carry over from pants and is it appropriate to place pants etiquette upon a kilt wearer?
Point of trivia: According to a number of internet sites, in the US suspenders have a clip type of closure and braces have button tabs on the ends. In the UK both type are braces.
