MacKay tartan -- large sett size

I had a client request a kilt from MacKay tartan, but with a 12" large sett size. So I had the cloth woven for him, and this is the end result.

It's a six yard kilt, knife pleated. Here it is spread out on the pressing board.

    And some more artistic shots.

I know they are not everyone's cup of tea, but I like these larger than normal setts. I have cloth in a large version of the Armstrong tartan I had woven for a kilt for myself, which I hope to one day make. If I can manage some time between now and Stone Mountain, perhaps. Lots of deadlines between now and then, though, so we'll see!

Matt, that looks fantastic, and I can't wait to get it in the mail. The wait for this kilt has been excruciating!

Very nice looking tartan. How did yall come up with the 12" sett? How does this compare to the normal sett? Very interesting. I'm curious because I've seen the MacGregor Rob Roy/Red&Black come in different sett sizes, too. And I think my Hunting MacGregor is a different sett size from my regular Clan tartan...

    Thanks,
    Wesley

Matt: Lovely rich colors, exquisite pleating - another gem. Congratulations!

Martin: I suspect (from first-hand experience) that your kilt will look even better in real life. Enjoy it. And, post some pictures for us to envy. And, I need to do the same.

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

I've always liked the look of the larger sett sizes. They look more dramatic to me. I knew from some of his posts that Matt was a fan of them also. So when it came time for my next kilt, I decided to order a 12" sett kilt from Matt. I believe that the normal Mackay sett size woven by Lochcarron is 7". I think that the larger sett size really helps the kilt stand out, especially with such a muted, dark colored kilt.

Thanks John. I'll be sure to post pix when it arrives. This is my second kilt from Matt. He also make my Ancient Mackay kilt three years ago.

That looks terrific. I wonder how it would look with a red stripe.

This a 12 inch sett and assuming "standard" sett is 7 inch how would or would there be a difference in the depth of the pleats.

As has been said you did and excellent job.

Like Gunn. Or possibly Morrison. :-)

Ordinarily, it would mean that you would get fewer, and deeper pleats. That is, if I pleated it the usual way. What I did with this kilt, however, was to pleat to the broad black stripe, which occurs twice per sett repeat. Therefore even though the sett was 12" I was able to pleat it as if it were a 6" sett, meaning I was able to put in twice as many pleats as I would have otherwise with the same amount of cloth.
